“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead |
How conservation districts got started In 1937, U.S. President Roosevelt established conservation districts throughout the country to help landowners learn about and protect natural resources. Conservation districts are unique units of State government, overseen by a locally elected five member board of directors. A conservation district acts primarily as a service organization responsible for many different programs to service the conservation needs of the individual landowners in the county.
Established in 1944, the Menominee Conservation District (MCD) is partially funded by a grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture. All other operating funds are raised through the sale of trees, shrubs and plants at the Spring Tree Sale.
Over the years, land use has changed. Environmental issues and protecting natural resources have moved to the forefront. The Menominee Conservation District continues to grow and evolve to reflect these changes. It is our goal to provide land owners with up-to-date information and education.
Public support is important!
Visiting this web site and ordering from the tree sale catalog supports natural resource conservation not once, but twice. First – Planting trees and shrubs improves wildlife habitat, helps reforest the land and improves the environment. Second – You help raise much needed funds. 100% of the funds raised are used to operate the Menominee Conservation District. We work to bring landowners natural resource information, adult and youth education and technical assistance.
Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals, groups and classrooms. Contact us for details of how you or your group can get more involved in the protection and conservation of natural resources.
