Invasive Plant Control Effort
Your Conservation District is working with the Upper Peninsula Resource Conservation and Development Council (RC&D), Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition and other concerned groups to "get a handle on" the plant species that are non native and invasive. Our efforts in 2010 focus on identification and mapping the locations most seriously impacted. In 2011 we will direct our efforts to control.
Utilizing funding from an RC&D Grant and the efforts of concerned volunteers, Menominee CD will focus on the following invasive plant species: Phragmities; Purple Loosestrife; Spotted Knapweed; Buckthorn (common and glossy); Autumn Olive; and Wild Parsnip.

Fifth Grade Conservation Education Program
Educating young people about the wise use and protection of natural resources is a Menominee Conservation District priority. The district staff partners with Sheryl Schrot, 4-H Youth Programs to teach county fifth graders about natural resources.
The program is divided into four areas: SOIL, WATER, WILDLIFE and MICHIGAN FORESTS. The presentations teach the conservation message of the wise use and protection of natural resources. 100% participation of every school in the county, means this practical message reaches every fifth grader in the county.
The U.P. Whitetails Association Menominee River Chapter are the proud private sector sponsors of this education program. In addition the Menominee County Board provides an annual appropriation to insure that this effort continues. “Working together to educate Menominee County youth on the value of conserving, protecting and wisely using all natural resources.”

Conservation Poster Contest
Menominee Conservation District along with co-sponsor 4-H Youth Programs offers this contest to kids grades 1-6. The theme changes each year to reflect a different natural resource. The Conservation District provides everything a teacher needs to conduct the contest. Art is a fun way to introduce kids to natural resources so they can begin to foster an appreciation and respect for nature.
